Next Consulting is a platform for projects that interest me
Public Funds Investment Institute. I spent 40 years building and heading PFM Asset Management LLC, which grew to manage more than $150 billion in fixed income and multi-asset class strategies for public agencies and not-for-profit organizations across the country. When PM Asset Management was sold to a large bank at the end of 2021 my employment terminated but my interest in supporting best practices, good governance and enlightened public sector investment policies persists. I have created Public Funds Investment Institute, https://pubfunds.org/ a not-for-profit organization, to continue this work.
Philanthropy Project. Private initiatives for public good stand alongside government and business initiatives as the pillars of the economy and society. Because sources of money and decision-making are decentralized there is little transparency into the workings of this “third segment” of our economic and social system. I’m interested in using data science techniques to gain insight into the way philanthropies and their donors use resources and make decisions that relate to their involvement in the economy and social system and their effectiveness.
Social Stress and Social Change in New York City 1815-1850. This is a carry-over from my never-completed Ph. D. dissertation. The data I collected on individual deviant behaviors in New York City during the period of immigration and industrialization is still in my hands and the key questions are still on my mind 50 years later. If I have the energy to catch up on two generations of history and sociology research I’d like to complete the research and synthesize the results.
